海の見える食堂には、いつも窓際の席だけが少し早く埋まった。
In the small diner facing the sea, the seats by the window always filled up a little sooner than the others.
私はその日、誰かを待つふりをして、一番端の席に座っていた。
That day, pretending to wait for someone, I sat at the far end.
注文したクリームソーダの氷は、波の音に合わせるようにゆっくり沈んでいった。
The ice in my melon soda sank slowly, as if keeping time with the sound of the waves.
昔ここで別れた人の名前を、私はもう声に出さなくなっていた。
I no longer said aloud the name of the person I had parted with here long ago.
それでも、窓の外を横切る船を見るたび、胸の奥で何かが少しだけ向きを変えた。
Still, whenever I saw a boat crossing the view outside the window, something deep in my chest shifted slightly.
店員が水を注ぎ足しながら、「今日はよく晴れましたね」と言った。
As the server refilled my water, she said, "It's a beautiful clear day, isn't it?"
私はうなずき、ようやく本当に誰も待っていないことを認めた。
I nodded and finally admitted that I wasn't really waiting for anyone.
