駅の端にあるベンチには、いつも同じ老人が座っていた。
An old man was always sitting on the bench at the end of the station.
彼は電車に乗るわけでもなく、誰かを待っているようにも見えなかった。
He didn't seem to be taking a train, and he didn't look as if he was waiting for someone.
ある夕方、私は思いきって隣に座った。
One evening, I finally sat down beside him.
老人は線路の向こうを見たまま、静かに言った。
The old man kept looking across the tracks and spoke quietly.
「ここにいると、昔の自分に会える気がするんです」
"When I sit here, I feel as if I can meet my younger self."
次の日、そのベンチは空いていた。
The next day, the bench was empty.
けれど私はしばらくの間、そこを通るたびに足を止めた。
But for a while, I stopped there whenever I passed by.
